Overview: The Belconnen Fresh Food Markets was purchased from the ACT Government in in 1996 by Efkar & Pontians (a subsidiary of Rock Development Group).

At the time, the markets were run down and poorly maintained with low returns and few tenants. An investment between 1996 -2006 of more than $9 million transformed the markets into a thriving and exciting hub of shopping activity.

Refurbishments included a new roof over the existing pedestrian areas, new stalls, a community plaza (The Piazza), a children’s play facility (The Giant Mushroom) and improved parking landscaping. Most importantly, the previously inward looking markets were augmented with new stalls that faced the car parking areas providing active frontages to both sides of the markets.

By 2001 the site area had grown to 25,500 square metres with the consolidation of Blocks 3, 5, part of Block 8 and part of Lathlain Street (became Block 12) and the lease variation increased the max GFA to 5520 square metres.
