Caring for the environment - it's the simple things

Caring for the environment is such a big issue and at the moment it’s so controversial. With things like the carbon tax and the solar feed in tariff in the ACT, it seems like caring for the environment is a hard thing to do.

Yes businesses must take big steps to help care for the environment, but it’s the simple things we can all do that make a big difference. I’m talking about stop littering and start recycling. It’s really not that hard to put something in the bin and almost everywhere you go where there is a waste bin, there’s a recycling bin not far away.

I was very surprised to read in the Canberra Times that at the ACT Sustainability Awards the Dame Phyllis Frost Litter Prevention Award was withheld because no community, business or government organisation was worthy of the prize.

I for one applaud the decision – there’s no point giving an award for no reason. What surprises me is that littering is still an issue.

With everything we know about the fragile environment we live in, the years of campaigns and Clean Up Australia Day’s we have been exposed to, I’m surprised that people are still so lazy that they throw their waste whereever convenient, rather than doing what’s right.

There’s really no excuse for littering and it’s one of the easiest ways to care for the environment.

The only positive in the Canberra Times article was that the ACT was revealed as the second cleanest state or territory in the Country. On average, the ACT recorded 51 pieces of litter for every 1000sqm. However, the national average of litter items per 1000sqm increased from 63 to 66 items from 2008-09 to 2009-10.

Do the right thing, put in the bin!
